Nutanix platform is the world’s first platform that support up to four hypervisor and fully hypervisor agnostic that currently supports major three enterprise class hypervisors like Nutanix own KVM based hypervisor known as Nutanix Acropolis Hypervisor (AHV), VMware vSphere ESXi hypervisor and Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisor.
Nutanix Hypervisor Agnostic – Nutanix supports / compatible with many hypervisors to install on same hardware and get full hyper-converged functionality. Nutanix platform was initially developed with VMware vSphere ESXi hypervisor only but later Nutanix decided to develop own hypervisor known as Nutanix AHV and develop compatibility with Microsoft Hyper-V also to give freedom to customers to choose hypervisor and free-up from vendor-lock-in.
Nutanix Supported Hypervisors
Nutanix platform is very flexible in term of choice of hypervisor and rid of vendor-lock-in afraid.
Nutanix platform currently supports three hypervisors as mentioned below in list:
- Nutanix Acropolis Hypervisor a.k.a Nutanix AHV
- VMware vSphere ESXi Hypervisor
- Microsoft Hyper-V Hypervisor
Nutanix AHV Hypervisor
Nutanix AHV ( Acropolis Hypervisor ) is the Nutanix own native enterprise with cloud supported hypervisor that’s first version released on December 2015. Nutanix AHV is KVM based hypervisor that is developed by Nutanix with copyright functionality.
Nutanix AHV is free and comes preinstalled with AOS bundled in Nutanix Node / Block.

VMWare vSphere ESXi Hypervisor
VMware vSphere hypervisor was released first version known Elastic Sky X ESX 1.5 in 2002, VMware ESX version history – this groundbreaking ESX product boosts performance, streamlines IT administration, and even helps organizations cut costs.
VMware released first vCenter version 1.0 in 2003, the vCenter server provides a centralized management platform that allows for simple deployment and automation of virtual infrastructures, along with greater visibility and control for IT.
Microsoft Hyer-V Hypervisor
Nutanix supports Microsoft Hyper-v hypervisor.
Xen Hypervisor ( Obsoleted )
Citix Xen server has been obsoleted because Cirix stopped the development and maintenance.
